January Newsletter for Nido

Happy New Year! Happy New Decade! I hope everyone enjoyed their Winter break and had the opportunity to spend time with the ones that are loved the most. Now we start our wintry January days, which give us the opportunity to explore cause and effect. We will be experimenting with water and ice. What happens to water when we put it outside in the cold? What happens to ice when we put salt on it? Or out it out in the sun? These experiments will lead to observations, questions and searches for answers. If Mother Nature cooperates we will also have fun in the snow, building snowmen with small, medium and large balls and figuring out what to use for eyes and noses. We will be extending the interest that our students have for birds, by thinking of ways to help care for them in the cold weather. Will any new ones visit our playground? What kind of food do they like best? We will curl up in the classroom and read books about bears and talk of hibernation. We will have our very own "Teddy Bear Picnic" in the classroom for lunch one day. Our primary focus will be early literacy and instilling love for books. The students loved Jan Brett's "The Gingerbread Baby" book last month, so we will be introducing more of her works on these cold days. We are ready for 2020!
