Naming each class grew out of our commitment to student ownership and partnership within the school community. We wanted an authentic way to reinforce that teachers and students share responsibility for their classrooms. Because Responsive Classroom emphasizes the power of language, we thoughtfully examined what our class names communicate, reflecting on each age group's developmental strengths and the ethos of its community. Faculty and students then chose names that honor these truths:
18 to 36 months – to honor their curiosity and growing independence. The intention is to create a nest, a safe space that promotes growth.
3 and 4 years – to honor the rapid growth and development of these ages. The intention is to nurture the sense of wonder, trust, and determination these children hold dear.
Kindergarten – to honor the adventurers, explorers, and observers found in this age group. The intention is to establish roots and support their growing understanding of their world and their place in it.
1st and 2nd Grades – to honor their active learning and energetic grappling with big ideas. The intention is to provide dynamic learning experiences that support a growing drive to do and be and understand.
3rd and 4th Grades – to honor their growing devotion and sense of place within their social group. The intention is to go deep into important studies, acting in stillness and joy, and supporting everyone in the process.
5th and 6th Grades – to honor their growing interdependence, independence, and swift movement into their larger community. The intention is to move into learning with power and peace and to discover the many ways to have an impact on their world.
7th and 8th Grades – to honor their tremendous and outward growth and drive to achieve honorable actions. The intention is to create a safe and challenging community that supports learners as they strive for new heights of personal and academic growth.
